Is it possible to go scuba diving if you have a perforated eardrum?

scuba diving
Jackie L asked:

My wife has always wanted to learn to scuba dive, but she has a perforated eardrum from a series of bad infections when she was young. She is concerned that if she does go, it will rupture her eardrum and she will lose her hearing. Our doctor is not sure what will happen, and I can’t get any straight answers from the guy that runs the local dive shop. Is there some kind of a cover or plug she can wear to protect that ear when she dives. This is one of her dreams to learn this, and I really want her to be able to learn.

I want to Scuba Dive in Lake Michigan out of Chicago, but can\’t find a charter place that rents equipment too.

Are there any places that leave from Chicago, and go out on Lake Michigan and will rent me a BC, Regulator, and Tank? I’m certified, but BC recently broke and despite what I’ve been told by the one dive outfit I ‘ve found here, why would anyone own their own tank?

samhbane asked:

I have a friend who knows everything about everything. However, this time I think he has overstepped his boundries. He has assured me that it doesnot matter what type of SCUBA tank you are using that the maximum time is one hour. I think he has let his alligator mouth overload his hummingbird ass. Thanks for the help

What should I do about getting a bloody nose while scuba diving?

Saf_nyc asked:

I went diving for the first time in Fiji a few months ago (I know I am insanely lucky), and everytime I got to depth my nose started bleeding. Normally I wouldn’t care, but there are a lot of sharks in the waters of Fiji and most places where I would consider going diving. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions? Should I be worried about getting mauled by a shark?

Thanks

What kind of scuba gear should I rent or buy?

mia b asked:

I just signed up for scuba classes at Underwater Sports here in Seattle, WA but am opting to do my final dives in the Bahamas in July.
Since I am not rich I’m wondering what scuba gear I should rent instead of buy, for a beginner.

Also - should your wetsuit fit snug or loose? I found an Oceanic brand 2 pc wetsuit on craigslist for $40 (in great condition) that’s for a female 100-120lbs & 5′-5′5″ tall, and I am 120lbs but almost 5.6.

What gear do I need for the Bahamas? Should I just rent there?

Can I use my surfing wetsuit to go scuba diving?

I’m getting certified and I have a wetsuit, but I’m not sure if diving suits have to be a certain thickness or not. My suit is a Rip Curl and its pretty nice. Let me know if I can use it.

Is alright for me to ditch my snorkel? It is the most worthless piece of SCUBA gear I own?

It seems that scuba divers are divided on this issue. On one hand, they say (I can’t speak from experience) that it’s necessary to have one in order to do a surface swim in rough waters, or to conserve airwhile surface swimming in calm waters.
On the other hand, I’ve met some instructors who never wear it except when teaching class because they claim that they’ve never used it, apart from certification dives, not even in the conditions described above.
My person feeling is that I hate the thing; it’s uncomfortable, no matter how much I try to adjust it or what type of holder I use to hold to my mask, it whacks me in the head or gets in my way. Plus, the quarries here in the midwest are not exactly rough waters, and if I have to surface swim, I can do it easier by swimming on my back.
So, fellow divers, what’s your take on this?
Thanks!
If you’re not a SCUBA diver, then please don’t respond… you don’t know what I’m talking about.
Thanks, bob, that’s the kind of info I need… from somebody who knows what they’re talking about!

I am interested in starting scuba diving. I am in good health, however a little afraid. I expect to only do shallow dives (10m or so). Are these kind of depths dangerous? Also, I have suffered mild panic attacks in the past. Should I do it?
I plan to take a PADI course in Australia in December.
