How Can I Become A Computer Technician?

dive computer
Simi asked:

I want to become a computer technician. One that fixes peoples computers. I have been looking at a few qualifications but dont know if they are worth it.

One is CompTIA A+ and the other is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP).

Which course could I dive straight into? I know how to build computers and repair them by experience. Which one would companies favour more? And would it be free for a 17 year old in the UK?

Thanks

In the school in which I work, they offer students the opportunity to work along side technicians to get on the job training, then generally the trainee is sent on courses, so I suggest you talk to some at your old school, the microsoft course can be expensive which is why it would be best to do it in the workplace to lose the cost, good luck.

well if you are out of school then go on a university course but if you are still in school then choose it as one of your buissiness studies

A+ is quite a basic qualification, MCP is far better, but even better is the MCSA/MCSE.

The Micro$oft ones are expensive but will be a better return in the long run.

Try the A+ and see how you go from there.

    OR

Stay in school /college and get on the courses there and they pay the fees for you… !

A+ is a good starting point.

You’ll need lots of work experience in a wide variety of systems if you want to be a (good) technician though. You could do a Modern apprenticeship. You’d work, get qualifications and learn on the job.

It’d be funded partly by government and partly by the employer. If you’re good, they might offer you a job after the apprenticeship is over.
    Ask at the jobcentre.

MCPs are ok, but don’t get stuck in a MS rut! Last I checked, A+ counted towards the higher MS qualifications (MCSA, etc) anyway.
Don’t get too stuck on being “a technician” though. It’s not terribly well paid. Aim higher. Stop off at technician on the way. ;)

Companies will favour whatever they need - If they use MS stuff, they’ll want XP, office, windows server, exchange, IIS… or they may not want MS stuff at all! They might want cisco, novell, linux, unix, mac…

You could stay in college or uni, but it doesn’t suit everyone. It didn’t suit me at the time, so I took the apprentice route.
